Depending on which residence hall your student is in, some of the beds are higher than others (and some are adjustable), so you might want your student to check the Virtual Tour of his hall and look at what the beds look like in the floor plan https://rlh.wfu.edu/housing/halls/
Families tend to go one of two ways on risers:
1) They come without risers to make sure the student/roommate decide if they want to bunk their beds (if applicable, not all do). If they decide they want risers, they buy them locally (if they are available).
2) Others pre-purchase risers (just so they have them) and decide at move-in if they want to use them (and return them if they do not)
My colleagues in Residence Life & Housing tell me that "Students are permitted to use bed risers up to 18" tall. Risers (heavy plastic) are available at places like Bed Bath & Beyond of Amazon" if that helps you know what is allowable.
