THIS WILL NEED TO BE TAILORED TO THE SPECIFIC SITUATION,

NAME - thanks for sharing this. I will pass on to some of my colleagues who work closely with University Police.

In terms of what to do to help keep students safe, the thing for all families to stress to students is if you experience a crime (or a near miss) or see something that seems suspicious, report it to University Police right away (336-758-5911 for situations that are a 911 type call, 336-758-5591 for a non-911 situation). University Police can only investigate things (or warn other people if applicable) if they know something happened. A group text to friends, sorority sisters, or even a text to parents does not alert the University that something is up. Police ideally needs to hear directly from the student(s) involved so they can investigate, but a third party such as your Deac can report it too.

Families can also reinforce to students that they should download the LiveSafe app, which can give them direct access to police, 911, etc. Families can also reinforce to students to follow the personal safety tips that University Police provides on their website, or refer back to the safety message our police chief sent at the start of the semester.

Student safety is of paramount importance to everyone - so please encourage students to get comfortable reporting things like this directly to University Police as soon as they can.

One other consideration: the parents@wfu.edu email account is typically monitored between 8:30 am-5 pm. After business hours, it is not routinely checked. In the event you need someone to see something right away, our After Hours Help page is the best place to go. It tells you where you can share the kind of info that requires a timely response.

Thanks again for sharing this - we appreciate your partnership.
